Mumbai: In a surprising turn of events, the International Yoga Day celebrations on 21st June this year has brought around an unexpected cheer among the Orthopaedic surgeons in India.

Orthopaedic surgeons were the worst hit in the medical fraternity when the the COVID pandemic struck 2 years back year, as most hospitals stopped elective surgeries and there were hardly any road traffic accidents due to the prolonged periods of lockdown.

Yesterday morning, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were flooded with photographs of wannabe individuals doing exotic Yoga asanas. Subsequently, most of them suffered with body ache and joint pains setting the cash registers ringing for orthopaedic surgeons since evening. The muscle soreness and pain was due to inflammation within the muscle, due to the sudden stress put on them after long periods of inactivity.

In an exclusive interview with Quackdoses, Dr. Todjodkar, a leading orthopaedic surgeon in Mumbai said, “With no work for months, Orthopaedic surgeons were feeling jealous of our colleagues in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology who were running packed OPDs during the pandemic. Our ortho community barely knows how to interpret Chest X-rays, except for for bony pathology like fractures of the ribs, clavicle or scapula, which prevented us from providing online consultation to COVID patients. Also, no pharmaceutical companies approached us for webinars on how to treat COVID. We’re now waiting for Janmashtami in coming months, where people make human pyramids to break pots but might end up breaking their bones instead.”

Unconfirmed sources have claimed that amid the 4th wave worry, many orthopaedic residents doing their post graduation are contemplating if they should apply for the 4 year Agneeveer program instead, till the COVID waves stop.
